Algebra 1 Course Information and Expectations

Course Goals and Descriptions

The objective of this course is to build upon, process, and apply fundamental skills of mathematics as aligned to the Oregon State Mathematics Common Core Standards.

 

Topics Covered in each semester:

First Half

  1. Review of 8th Grade Math

  2. Solving Equations

  3. Solving Inequalities

  4. Linear Equations

Second Half

  1. Linear Systems (Graphing, Substitution, Elimination)

  2. Properties of Exponents

  3. Introduction of Polynomials (Operations, Factoring)

  4. Data Analysis (If time permits)

 

Content covered will include, but not be limited to: solving equations, inequalities, functions, linear equations, factoring, and polynomials

Credit

A high school student will receive 1.0 math credits for the successful completion of both semesters of this course.

 

Grading

Student grades are broken down into the following categories:

80% Standards Tests/Quizzes/Graded Homework

10% Daily Work (homework, in-class work, behavior, etc)

                              10% Final 

 

Letter grades will be given as follows

 

A             90% and above

B             80-89%

C             70-79%

D             60-69%

F              Below 60%

 

Materials (required everyday)

  • Algebra 1 notebook – 3 ring binder

  • 1 spiral notebook

  • Paper, pencil (mathematics is completed in pencil only), and composition book/notebook.

  • Scientific Calculator (Students are strongly encouraged to purchase their own graphing calculator as they will be used throughout all high school math courses.  I SUGGEST THE TI-30IIS)

 

 

Late Work Policy

  • Daily Assignments are accepted for full credit ON the DUE DATE.

  • Assignments will be accepted for partial credit UP TO the DAY OF THE TEST.

  • Students with excused absences may have the number of days missed PLUS one to turn in assignments for full credit

 

Attendance and Tardy Policy

You are expected to be in class on time!  If tardiness becomes an issue, you will be referred to the office for further detention. You are also expected to be actively participating in class everyday.

 

Additional Help

 I will be available from 7:30 – 8:00 Monday through Friday, almost every day at lunch, and after school  until 4:30 on most days. If these times do no work for any student I am more than happy to help any way I can. 

 

Special Needs

This course includes modifications in instruction to address level and rate of learning for all students.  If you feel you require modifications, please speak privately with me about an individual plan to meet your needs.
