Class Description:  

Construction Technology is an instructional program that teaches individuals necessary skills that will used for employment in the building trades. Construction Technology I is a basic course teaching fundamentals of safety, tools, math, and basic carpentry, electrical, masonry, and plumbing skills. Through-out the length of the year, this class will build a complete tiny house and frame-in a second unit. Every effort is given to accommodate all diverse learning needs. 

Objectives: 

1.       To introduce and master shop/construction safety precaution and awareness.

2.       To reinforce basic math skills by incorporation of practical application.

3.       To identify hand and power tools and describe their uses.

4.       To introduce the students to reading and interpreting construction blueprints.

5.       To identify construction materials and describe their uses.

6.       To introduce the students to basic skills and knowledge in fields of Carpentry, Electrical Wiring, and Plumbing .

Course includes topics on:

Introduction and Orientation

Basic Safety

Basic Math

Hand and Power Tools

Introduction to Blueprints

Materials Used in Building Trades

Introduction to Carpentry

Introduction to Electrical Wiring

Introduction to Masonry

Introduction to Plumbing

 

 

Required Supplies:  (1) 1 inch 3-ring binder – Color of your choice

Grading Scale:

                        Class Work, notebook             30%

                        Safety tests                              30%

                        Project                                     40%

 

Safety:  The safety of our student is of our utmost concern. Each student will be taught basic safety and will pass the safety exam with a score of 100 before entering the shop for work. If safety test is passed on the second attempt, a score of 90 will be entered into the grade book. If passed on the third attempt, a score of 80 will be entered, and so on. Safety glasses are required to enter into the shop for any reason. Equipment operation will only be done under direct supervision of the instructor.

Student Expectations:

1.       Be on time.

2.       Be attentive.

3.       Be respectful to others.

4.       Use time, tools, and materials appropriately.

5.       Practice professionalism.

6.       Learn.

Tentative Schedule:

First trimester will be focused on framing the walls and getting it “dried in” meaning it will be to a point of water not getting into the house. Second trimester will finish up the exterior and start the electric and plumbing. Third trimester will be finishing the inside furnishings.

 Construction Site Field Trips: Several times throughout the year as permissible. 

I would like to take the students on at least one community service trip this year such as Habitat for Humanity. This could be a Saturday trip. Details will come at a later date.
