Teacher: Mr. Wood                                                                           Requirement met: Elective

Course Description

CTE courses are designed to introduce students to general shop practices that will enable them to successfully build a variety of projects. While the students expand their shop knowledge and experience through various projects, lessons, and vocabulary, they will also be learning valuable lessons that they will be able to apply to virtually any job situation they choose in their future. Currently Waldport High offers Material Tech Woods, Material Tech Metals, Material Tech Construction, and Material Tech Design. All four areas offer 4 levels (1 ,2 ,3, and independent study) of study to enable students the opportunity to take each class more than once and know that each level will challenge them. Every effort is given to accommodate all diverse learning needs.

Material Tech Woods -  Woods 1 is a hands on class where they learn the basics of woodworking by building a wood box that is made of different species of woods glued together. They will learn how to operate all the power tools, how to joint and glue up wood, how to cut miters, and how to apply a finish.

Woods 2 is a continuation where they learn about cabinet making by making a night stand out of 1/2 sheet of plywood. They will learn cutting dadoes, making face frames, drawers, and doors. Woods 3 is where the student will design the project on their own.  A 1/2 sheet of plywood is supplied and they must do all the planning themselves. In the independent study class, they are free to design and make thier own project but they must provide all the materials.

Material Tech Metals - Metals 1 is a basic intro into the metal area where they will learn sheet metal work and get a basic understanding of MIG, Stick, and Oxy/Acetylene welding. Metals 2 will be a more in depth study into the 3 welding areas which includes welding in different positions and learning how to read welding blueprints Metals 3 the students will design and build a small project on their choice. Metals Independent study is where they are able to work on individual projects.

Material Tech Construction - This class is designed to be a progressive class through the process of building a tiny house/building. Each term increases their knowledge of the construction trade. Topics covered will be framing, roofing, windows and doors, siding, electrical, and plumbing.

Material Tech Design - This class is about designing usable, functional items using industrial scrap such as gears, cable, engine parts, bicycle parts, old tools, miscellaneous nuts and bolts, and even parts of machinery. Each term they will be challenged to use a larger variety of items to create usable items.

General information

Behavior – Students are expected to display good, acceptable behavior at all times. These include: being on time, showing respect to instructors as well as fellow students as well as all projects , having a positive attitude, showing encouragement. The following behaviors are serious enough to consider removal from class.

Horseplay – running, wrestling, any activity deemed dangerous

Vandalism – Damage to any school tool or property or to another’s project

Safety – Safe work habits and attitudes are stressed at all times. Students are expected to follow all safety rules for the shop, consider others as well as themselves or forfeit the right to use the facility. Safety glasses, ear plugs, and aprons will be worn at all times – unless instructed otherwise. Students will take safety tests and must pass them with 100%. Students are expected to take the safety tests very seriously and to study the information before taking the tests.
